CUBAN FOLK MUSIC
Songs from the Spirit

Singer-songwriter Marcos Pereda was born in Cuba in 1968 to a family of artists. Marcos has the gift of an angelic voice and a passion to communicate deep spiritual truth through words and music. He started playing guitar and composing songs when he was 17.  Marco's music combines the melodic style of Nueva Trova (New Song) made popular by fellow Cuban Silvio Rodríguez, with Marco’s own lyrics.  The unique result is, as Marcos says, “Canciones del Espíritu”, Songs from the Spirit. In his music, sung in Spanish, one can hear elements of Flamenco and baroque in addition to traditional Cuban music.

In the 1980s Marcos was awarded first prize in the Cuban New Song festival in Havana. After that, he started playing in venues such as Casas de Cultura (cultural centers) around the capital, the Fine Arts Museum, the Spanish Embassy, the theater of the Plaza de la Revolución, and the Cafe Cantante of the National Theater.

Since arriving in the United States in 1999, Marcos has played at the Minneapolis Government Center, La Pena in Berkeley, for weddings, at clubs and restaurants and house concerts from Mendocino County, where he lives, to Sacramento and San Jose. He also teaches Cuban folk music at the Lake Tahoe Community College Spanish Immersion program.

Marcos has recorded with musicians in the US including guitarist and Grammy Award Alex De Grassi, Grammy Award winner Paul McCandless, and with Cuban musicians Kelvis Ochoa and Maykel Blanco among others.  His CD is called Espacio Azul. He is in the process of recording a CD with just guitar and voice.

Marcos is available to play house concerts, for special events, at clubs and restaurants. His phone number is 707-391-6062 and email is marcosinsonte@hotmail.com www.marcospereda.com

Lisa Stano

Date:
Friday June 6th
Time:
8:30pm - 11:00pm
Price:
No Cover Charge
Details:

Hailing from California, Lisa Stano set out to create music following in the steps of some of the most iconic performers of the 70’s soul, R&B and Motown scene, including Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder and Carole King, just to name a few.

Her love affair with music started at a very young age, rapt by the energy and feel of The Kinks, The Clash, as well as cult rockers Led Zeppelin. It did not take long before Lisa's musical horizon became wide open, including a kaleidoscopic variety of influences ranging from rock to folk music. This exposition to music at 360 degrees is portrayed within her debut album "All Dressed Up and Everywhere to Go" a collection of heartfelt tunes that manage to create a bridge in between the artist and the listener with their stark emotional attitude.

Lisa strikes for her formula; a great compromise in between the skills acquired through her formal music training and the instinctive passion always residing within her heart.

Craig Corona

Friday June 20th & July 25th
Time:
8:30pm - 11:00pm
Price:

Details:

Born and raised on Long Island during a period when most kids were listening to glamour rock it's hard to believe that Craig could have been pushed in the direction to perform Bluegrass and Country music. He taught himself to play on his father's cheap, old, nylon string classical (which he still has).

With influences from Hank Williams to John Denver to Crosby Stills and Nash, Craig began writing and performing folk music with a country flavor. In 1989, when he graduated college, he had had enough of New York and relocated to Boulder, Colorado. The diverse music scene in Boulder caught his attention immediately and Bluegrass became a new area to explore. In 1997, Craig released his first full length CD, Sawmill Town, featuring all original music. His early influences of folk, country and bluegrass were married and produced smooth vocals and harmonies. Currently he performs as a solo singer/songwriter and does a number of cover tune shows where he performs country, pop & rock tunes from the 60's, 70's, 80's and more, Though not fully touring he has played across the western United States.

2012 brought the release of his new album, About Time.  Drawing from life in the mid-west, emotional inspiration and history a picture is painted crossing the lines of folk, country, bluegrass and acoustic rock. The album invokes feelings and thoughts about life, hardship, belief and accomplishment.

Deborah Crooks Americana/Songwriter – vocals - acoustic guitar, "...a more diverse take on Americana with a distinctly female tone, and quite charming." — East Bay Express

Bay Area songwriter, Deborah Crooks' lyric-driven and soul-wise music draws on folk, rock, Americana and the blues. Often compared to Lucinda Williams and The Cowboy Junkies, she's recorded three full-length CDs of original music, including her latest well-received release, "Little Bird" (2013) www.deborahcrooks.com Crooks will be  joined by Kwame Copeland on guitar- backup vocals, who plays Americana with an undercurrent of jazz and rock. Kwame took up guitar when he was 12 and has been writing songs and singing ever since. He is influenced by Dylan with an affinity for Americana, as well as 60’s and 70’s rock. Songwriting influences are mainly folk and real country artists like Townes Van Zandt, and Steve Earle. 2010 brought Kwame his 1st solo record, called “Simple Things”. These are two very talented musicians you would not want to miss.
